Play Dates

Every night, the chicken
played with the new dog
like old friends, taking turns
laughing, hugging, leaping
at trees, across lawns
under a bush, out of sight.

Last night, the dog
re-emerged sober
the chicken, dangling
in a cloud of feathers.

Play dates are over.
